Rosenberg Mention of the Day: On this day, March 29, 1951, after a deeply tainted, politically-motivated trial lasting three weeks, Julius & Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage in federal court in New York City. “That was the formal legal charge,” writes the Rosenbergs’ two sons Michael and Robert in a 2015 Opinion for the New York Times, “but in the public’s mind they were executed for providing our archenemy, the Soviet Union, with the ability to destroy our country with atomic bombs.” The boys were only six and ten years old when two years later their parents were executed in a case that's come to symbolize the height of McCarthy-era hysteria.
