A new #StrangeFruitMOTD courtesy of NBC's recent video clip celebrating Black Music History month. The clip highlights Billie Holiday and her performance of "Strange Fruit," originally a poem by Abel Meeropol protesting the brutal practice of lynching.
"When [Billie Holiday] first started singing her iconic 'Strange Fruit' at New York's Cafe Society in 1939 ... the song would be the last of the night, the waiters would stop serving drinks, and the only light in the room would be on her face. The song started as a poem, written by a teacher, that asked how the world could ignore the gruesome practice of lynching. That song was so powerful that TIME magazine actually named it the 'Song of the Century' in 1999."
