Sixty years ago this June, a mother and father wrote to their little boys, ages six and 10, for the last time. In that letter from Sing Sing Prison’s death row, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg told Robert and Michael that as they faced the end of their lives, they were, “comforted in the secure knowledge that others would carry on after us.” At 7:00 pm on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at The Town Hall in New York City, Robert and Michael Meeropol will be joined by Angela Davis, Eve Ensler, and other artists and activists, to honor those words through the Rosenberg Fund for Children’s production of CARRY IT FORWARD: Celebrate the Children of Resistance.
This all-new stage event, which intersperses readings and dramatized vignettes with music and poetry, will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Rosenbergs’ executions and honor their legacy of resistance. The program will celebrate the courage of families who continue to struggle for social justice today. And it will be Robert Meeropol’s public farewell to the RFC community, before he retires this summer from the Fund’s executive directorship and passes the reins to his daughter, Jennifer Ethel Meeropol.
CARRY IT FORWARD (www.rfc.org/cifevent) will also feature poetry from Martín Espada, plus music from hip hop group, Rebel Diaz, and the husband and wife folk duo, Mike + Ruthy. Additional cast members will be announced in coming months. As an added bonus, Eve Ensler (author of The Vagina Monologues) will sign copies of her forthcoming book, In the Body of the World, at the conclusion of the stage event.
Just as people gathered in New York’s Union Square in 1953 on the night of the Rosenbergs’ executions to find strength in community and the collective will to keep fighting for a better world, so will the RFC’s extended family come together for this historic evening to remember Ethel and Julius, say goodbye to Robert, and celebrate the courage of families who continue to resist today. We hope you’ll join us!
