From indigenous artists using hip hop and digital media to fight colonization, to how the War on Terror is criminalizing entire communities; from the campaign for a $15/hour minimum wage, to the fight against solitary confinement and mass incarceration; and from “Antipsychiatry’s Challenge to the Left,” to revolutionary politics in Venezuela and Quebec, and scores of other topics, Left Forum 2014 was a thrumming beehive of discourse about progressive movements across the U.S. and around the globe.
I am thrilled to announce that the RFC will co-sponsor Seeger Fest (www.seegerfest.org), a five day celebration (July 17 – 21) of the lives, work, activism and music of Pete and Toshi Seeger.
In the next few weeks, the RFC will bring our CARRY IT FORWARD: Celebrate the Children of Resistance film to both the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City. Coming up first is the west coast premiere, on May 14th, at the Berkeley City College Auditorium. Then on May 31st, we’ll have a screening at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, as part of this year’s Left Forum.
We just completed our spring granting cycle and I’m happy to welcome two new beneficiary families and another targeted activist youth to our community. These new grantees include:
One of my favorite parts of my job is receiving out-of-the-blue emails and letters from beneficiary families wanting to update us on their activism, their lives or their children. I received such an email a few days ago from an activist dad who shared a reflection his 19-year-old daughter, Moira, wrote about her recent alternative spring break trip.
