Today's Strange Fruit Mention of the Day is an event on Thursday, February 8th that we've really looking forward to attending. There's still time to register for "The Billie Holiday Symposium," at Hunter College's Roosevelt House (both in person and on Zoom). The gathering celebrates "the artistry of Billie Holiday and the publication of Bitter Crop: The Heartache and Triumph of Billie Holiday's Last Year, a new book by Paul Alexander."
The opening panel "Billie Holiday and the Legacy of 'Strange Fruit'" features Rosenberg son Michael Meeropol, veteran journalist and author David Margolick (who wrote the excellent book, "Strange Fruit: The Biography of a Song") and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and critic Margo Jefferson. Additional panels and performances include Ricky Riccardi (Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong House Museum), Mala Waldron (singer-songwriter and Billie Holiday's goddaughter), Sonny Rollins (grammy-winning legendary tenor saxophonist) and many others.
