One of the themes of the CARRY IT FORWARD program was the transmission of progressive values to future generations (see full story here). A new donor and our former intern, the third generation of her family to support the RFC, read her story — excerpted here — as part of the show.
My name is Emma and I am from a family of activists, old left and new left and even newer left… I was teased for being loud and female in school and that made me bound and determined that I was going to prove that what I was saying mattered and that being a girl wouldn’t stop me from doing anything, particularly speaking my mind. In the background of these experiences were the songs of various movements that we sang and listened to at home.
When I was 14, I was arrested with my mom at an anti-prison industrial complex demo in DC. I recently received money as part of a settlement brought by those of us arrested that day. Naturally some of the settlement money needs to go back into the relevant activist pot and the RFC is such.
As we transition to new leadership at the RFC, it’s gratifying to see new contributors join those who have been with us for years, even decades. We welcome Emma, and others of her generation, to the RFC donor community.
